The camera shoots AVCHD, and so you need to get it into ProRes to edit it. If your system is crashing when you open the log and transfer window, that's your real problem.
Post the OS, versions of QuickTime and FCP you're running right now... also post how you installed the OS you have right now... like as an 'upgrade' from a previous OS? When you installed FCS, did you do it cleanly on a clean OS? If not, that's most likely your problem with the AVCHD files you're working with.
