Arnie is spot on Jacob, whatever you may think you really do not want to apply a widescreen "filter" to al your clips before adding them to the timeline, if for no other reason that any further basic motion operations (resize/reframe?) and any filters added during the course of your edit (color correction?) will then be applied to the clip w/ widescreen already added. Not desirable. As noted add a widescreen matte to an upper layer and you'll be much better off.
