sure, but it's easy to lose a tape number even after it's been entered.

if you close and re-open log & transfer, the reel re-sets to 001.
heck, if you open log & transfer after putting the tape in the deck, the reel is set as 001,
and there's no warning.

it's not just sloppy editors / assistants
tapes can be labbeld wrong.
or maybe you have two people logging rushes at the same time,
and there are identical tape numbers,
so it wouldn't be caught until later.

or you have some media with no reel# and you want to give it one.

lots of reasons.
