It sounds like you're using FCP's own chroma keyer to pull the key. Bad idea. That keyer stinks.

To get a good-looking key including spill suppression without buying any other fancy keying plugins, you really owe it to yourself to do the work -- the complete shot, both foreground and background -- in Motion. The chroma keyer in Motion is much better and it has far better ancillary tools, like a spill suppressor. In instances like this, it's good to think of FCP as an editing application with delusions of being able to do more complicated effects work.

Then there's always the issue of shooting HDV. The color in HDV may look fine to the eye, but a computer is far more discriminating, especially when it comes to color resolution... and that's where HDV treats colors the way a baby treats a diaper.

Not surprisingly, color resolution really counts when color keying.
