Compressor, QuickTime don't support nonsquare pixels?
by Drew Lahat on Jul 27, 2009 at 5:09:31 am

I have DVCProHD MOVs, rewrapped by FCP 6.0.6 from the original P2 MXF media using the regular Log and Transfer function. These have a native resolution of 960x720.

In Quicktime Player, the inspector reports the format as "960x720 (1248x702)". The Normal Size is 1248x702. Why that size? no idea. At least it shows the correct aspect ratio.

I'm trying to transcode to H.264 using Compressor 3.0.5, and these show up in QT Player as "960x720 (1280x720)" - but the Normal Size is 960x720. QT Player insists treating the file like it has square pixels.

Under Geometry, I tried to force the dimensions manually - frame size 960x720, pixel aspect 0.75 DVCProHD 720p60 16:9 - it made no difference.

Am I expecting too much from Compressor and Quicktime?

I'm using QT Player 7.6.2.
