Sony HDR-SR7 transfer to Final Cut Express

Log and Transfer from a Sony HDR-SR7 is transcoding footage very pixelated and scrambled in Final Cut Express4. Import to iMovie 8 works fine. I've gone through the following troubleshooting tasks:
• uninstalled perian
• changed easy setup AIC to see if that would correct problem
• changed usb ports into macbook pro
• restarted system and software
• updated final cut express

This is a macbook pro 2.4 intel core duo 4gb ram.

any advice appreciated.
