i use Font Book for this.
this is an app that comes with OSX.

under the Preview Menu in Fontbook, chose Custom (Apple 3)
and you can type in the text you want to preview.

the up and down arrows will take you thu all the available fonts.

i've got Fontbook in my dock, but it wish i could do this in FCP
