If you apply a limiter to a whole mixed track then any over limit on a single item (eg an FX bang) will cause the whole track to be limited when an over limit occurs. This can be most detrimental to the final mix. Remember limiters are not just mere 'clippers'.
Ideally you should put limiters on individual tracks so as not to cause this problem.
