Editing xdcam ex1 footage and FCP 6.0.4

Hey All,
I am new to this forum in hopes to finding some answers to editing xdcam footage. I have shot some xdcam ex1 1080p24 footage which I am editing on my Mac. My mac specs are
- 2 x 2.66Ghz dual core
- 8 GB Ram
I am running into some problem with filters and transitions. I add the 3-way color corrector and a cross dissolve between 2 shots; however the playback on my computer screen is crappy. What would cause this? I have set the render sequences option to ProRes.
I normally shoot weddings and corporate videos so I am switching between 1080p24 and 720p60. Is it better to edit the footage natively or go ProRes 422?
Thanks
