You misunderstood me.

I capture at DV25 720x576.

My idea was to encode MPEG-2 with 352x576 instead of 704x576. There's really no need for full resolution since you have already lost that much from the original VHS footage.

I'll have a look at Video Purifier and the free Noise Reduction suggested here.
