Consumer product lines are not geared for professional level applications. Never have and never should. If you need the horsepower for professional level apps, get the professional level Macbook Pro (or Mac Pro). Regardless of if the consumer level products can run the apps, Apple has deliberately left them short of what the Pro apps need in order to run smoothly and efficiently. Especially when thinking on the long term. A Macbook is going to loose it's ability to run newer versions of Pro Apps much quicker than the Macbook Pro is.

There are plenty of stories (here at the Cow as well) of those who've used consumer level products to run pro apps, but you'll need to take note of the limitations that are involved. You will be crippled in some way if you decide to use a consumer computer to run professional applications.
