The reason this setting is there is that when you turn off Desktop Mirroring, you reduce the processing necessary by the CPU on playback. Since playout thru your video output is the first priority (in most cases) turning off Desktop display makes sure you have as much system resources as possible available for playout. Comes in handy when you're doing realtime effects, and haven't rendered yet. Or if you're on a slower system , but using higher end codecs, such as ProRes.
