Another way to approach this is to have entire subdirectories that are filled with the lowrez proxy objects. Then by simply renaming the the subdirectories you can switch between high-and low-rez.

However, this makes it complicated to mix and match BOTH hi and low rez.

Take a look at UNSEEN BY CAMERA (can be laborious), or switching objects on and off (ACTIVATION) in the Scene Editor.

The New Scene Editor should enable you to do these kinds of operations en masse.
