PAL to NTSC frame rate
by Simon Cawthorne on Apr 26, 2009 at 5:09:22 pm

Hi All,

I'm putting together a short animated sequence that I wanted to render for NTSC as well as for PAL. (and in HDV and D1 for that matter!)

In doing test renders I've noticed an issue that may indicate I will not be able to simply change my camera setting and frame rate to suit each format and then render:

With the test animation set up at 30fps originally, when I change the frame rate to 25fps, and change the camera settings too, along with the global fps setting in general display option panel - and finally with the relevant codec also set to render at 25fps , no matter what I do, Lightwave renders a 30fps animation.

I'd imagined I'd be able to adjust within Lightwave and then render out to each format. I this the case? or is the problem I'm having symptomatic of a mistake I'm making in my set up? I have searched the forum and the web and I have come across others raising this issue, but it never seems to have been clearly answered.

Simply forcing FCP or AE to interpret a sequence or QT movie as 25fps when it is 30fps is not a realistic options, as I have seen suggested, as this will produce uneven motion.

Is a get around possible by setting p one scene with 30fps, exporting all the motion files, lights etc and then importing these into a pre set up 25fps scene? I haven't tried this, but would like to generate the two sequences from within LW rather than attempt a standards conversion after the fact.

Would ensuring keyframes were all strictly placed at points that will divide within each frame rate on a fractionally measured timeline of frames mean LW could handle a framerate change?

These are all conjecture; can anyone who has had to deal with this or a similar issue point me in the right direction please.

With thanks for reading

Simon
