I believe you can't just format it easily. I'd either

1. upgrade my hard driver to a bigger / better one and then install lion on it, then restore from time machine backup.

2. or clone the drive using super duper, fresh install SL and then upgrade it to Lion online.

Just make sure you have some sort of backup of the original drive so you don't lose your stuff.
