my guess is that you are trying to simply drag all the contents of the system drive to the external. The reason for the message saying [pixelmeister] ""One or more files are busy and can't be copied. " is because you are probably trying to copy the system files that are always in use.

If you just copy your users folder that should contain all your personal data.

Another option is to clone the drive using a program like carbon copy cloner.
