hello...

well - i'm not here to judge - i will say in the end that i don't know if i buy the argument, but i do understand the other side of that if you leave a wireless setup unprotected, then you take that risk...and yes - you are right that tracking them down in that situation is not feasible...

so go forth, i say. but wrt to your other cable modem install issue - you really don't need them to install anything - depending on your setup, they should be able to turn on the access remotely and then you can go just pick up a cable modem and plug it in - the whole "install" thing is sort of a farce, and the majority of it is usually installing software on your box that you don't need (you need nothing to attach to a cable modem software-wise, except for some sort of firewall, but that is just for protection)...
