shattered glass effect

Hey all, first I would like to say that creative cow has been an immense help to my video editing hobby and I am very thankful for your awesome tutorials!

So recently I had watched the movie Constantine and saw the most notable scene where satan breaks that glass and it slowly freezes in midair. As he walks through this cloud of shattered glass, he occasionally walks into little shards that bounce off him. If you haven't seen it, the scene is a pretty well done job of cgi effects.

My question to all of you is, is there some sort of tutorial that is somewhat similar to reproducing this effect that you have seen? I have looked at the video copilot tutorial on putting in a meteor hole and could possibly work something up that way, I'm just kind of new to the whole 3D animation portion. Thanks for your help!
