Rob,
I am on a PC so things might act differently. I just did what you said and got nothing. The reason being you don't want to be putting Starfield on a solid. Try applying it directly to your footage or if you want it on a different layer you would need to create a new "Adjustment layer" instead of the solid. You should immediately see soft blue and white stars as the defaults.
Note the "single dot" as star shape is difficult to see.
As far as a bug with it, I have had no problems at all. So that may be Mac specific.
