You might want to experiment with the animation preset of t_ExplodeUp that you can find in Particular. By manipulating the physics, setting particle type to smokelet, adjusting gravity and using bounce, you can acheive a fairly realistic mortar shell hit. There are a lot of settings, so take things one step at a time and write down what you do. If you get really off course, hit the reset and you can start fresh.
