That's interesting, I actually work the other way: Maya to C4D.
You're correct, FBX does not transfer textures or does an extremely bad job at it. I think .obj does, but it doesn't do it flawlessly. That's why I prefer to texture in the same program as I will render in. It always requires extra texture-work otherwise.
I'd give the .obj export a chance.
