Problem making basic selections in MAYA 8.5

Each time I select a face, edge or vertex in MAYA 8.5 it selects an entire region. similar to a grow select, but the selection ranges in color from yellow to orange to red. When I attempt to deform, move / scale etc it effects entire region, not just selected face, as if it were the soft modification tool.
It must be a setting I have clicked without realizing.
I have tried switching on and off everything I can think of ! AT this stage I am considering re-installing entire package !

Any Suggestions welcome !
