If you're doing an 'opens to the side' type animation I'd say cloth might be the way to go for realistic movement; either Maya cloth or Syflex. I also remember seeing a softbody tutorial once that used painted weights to simulate a curtain blowing in the wind (the top part was weighted more so it moved less)...
