I've found the best way to rebuild Illustrator paths (for text or logos or whatever) that look blocky is to select path, go under Modeling module, Edit Curves/Insert Knots/change to Between Selects and adjust # Knots to taste. That way the corners and general appearance of your path remains the same but it adds additinal Knots to smooth out curves. No idea why Maya resorts to such bad approximations of Illustrator paths...
