Shooting night time Stars with a Cannon Eos 20D

Hi,
I just bought a used Eos 20D camera. I am in a very remote part of Colorado and the stars at night are unreal. I tried to take a few pictures last night, but everything came out black. I assume you need to have the shutter hold open for a while with the iris fully open. I am not sure how to do this as I am brand new to the camera.
Anyone familiar with this camera who can give me some good settings would be my pal!
thanks!
Gary
