shooting SD with A1

Hello,
I'm thinking about getting an HDV camera and shooting HD but down converting to SD on the import to FCP. I've heard HDV is too buggy.
I've noticed the A1 records to miniDV as well, I'm assuming SD. If I record to miniDV, will I get the same image quality as shooting HD, then down converting to SD on the import?
Thanks,
Robert J. Grauert, Jr.
