Hannes Reisingernew GPU for CS5.5 and XSI
by on Jun 9, 2012 at 1:34:38 pm

Hello there!

I'm planning to upgrade my little workstation with a better GPU. Most of my work is done in Adobe CS5.5 (mostly Premiere, AE and PS) and Softimage 2013.
Here's my current system:
i7-980 (6x3,33ghz)
6X4GB 1333MHz DDR3-ram
ATI HD5770

I'm pretty happy with my computer, but my preview and viewport acceleration could be way better – hence the decision to get an NVIDIA CUDA card.
Also, every once in a while I'm fooling around with massive multi-display output (Resolume Arena 4.0.1) and need a faster card for that. (Although this task may sooner or later run on an indipendent system with an ATI card)

I narrowed my selection down to two alternatives:
– GTX680 4GB
– GTX670 4GB

Basically, I'm leaning towards the 680; it has the most power of all alternatives.
But with the 670, I'm saving close to 100,- and I'm not sure if the difference is ever so noticeable. And money definitely is an issue for me; still a student, soon to be a freelancer with no huge client base.
Any advice here? Save the 100,- or go for the bigger card?

Also, there's another issue that bugs me:
The latest card that Adobe certified for CUDA support is actually the GTX580. I've been able to find an instruction on how to unlock non-certified cards to run on CUDA, but I'm worried about how that may cause some issues.
So, is anyone running a GTX670/680 with unlocked CUDA and can report problems? Or is Adobe just a little overcautious there and needs some more time to certifiy the cards?

Thanks in advance for your help!
