Sennheiser wireless mike to PC

Hi guys, forgive me if I'm a newbie to mikes. I just received a sennheiser ew 100. The kit only contained a wireless mike and a receiver. The back ports of the receiver has a 1/4 inch socket as well as a male XLR connector. I went to the store today to get a 1/4 inch wire and a 1/4 inch to 3.5mm adapter thinking this would make the receiver and mike work with my PC but Windows doesn't even seem to recognize anything plugged into the mike jack.

Is there any way that I could make this setup work? And oh, I can't afford a preamp right now if that's what it takes.
