media player extended desktop preview / program

I have Googled the heck out of this and can't seem to find an answer.

When I use Powerpoint on a laptop running Windows 7 and I extend the desktop to a projector, I can output my presentation to the extended desktop. I cannot do that with media player - I have drag the window to the desktop and manipulate it there. It's irritating for the audience to see the mouse pointer on the projector screen as I find the right chapter to play on a DVD, especially if I need to play a chapter and switch to another after that. Media Player 12 does not seem to have this option which seems crazy when Powerpoint does. Am I missing something or is there an option buried somewhere I don't know about?

If not, is there a low cost program that allows me to use my extended desktop as a preview/program bus?
