"Who's the manufacturer and how old is it?"

Maxtor 3200 and I would say 4-6 years old.

"Is the enclosure not working, or did the drive fail? "

I believe the drive failed. I came into work and the external was making an alarm type noise. Upon further research I found that they say it was a power supply issue. I changed supplies. Same response. Changed USB cables, nothing changed. In the device manager it can see the drive. But when you go into My Computer the drive is not there.

My last resort was to take the drive out of its case and plug directly into the comp. I did this and it ended with the same result.

This is where I am.
