Here's my 2 cents -
In all these times you have spent waiting for it to shutdown 'normally' or troubleshoot, a fresh version of XP SP2 could have been installed. Perhaps it is something in the image which you are using for re-imaging. Whatever!
When the gremlins cannot be discovered, best advice then is to -
1. install a fresh version of XP SP2
2. Image this.
3. Install the cards, etc and drivers and necessary applications for your periphereals
4. Image this and call it 'After drivers and apps'.
5. Now get some work done and delete the old image you have been using.
