I have automatic updates disabled already.
I decided to plug in a network cable, obtain an ip, and shutdown. This time the shutdown process took even longer... some thing like 1.5 hours!
During normal operation, svchosts (there are 5 of them) isn't taking up any cpu at all. As far as mem usage, one of them is using 18,436k and the others are all around 2 and 4,000k.

The Goods: Avid MC 2.2.15 Adrenaline, Symphony Nitris 1.6.5, Unity 3.5. HP xw8200 turn-key computers. AJ-HD1400, 1200, HDW-1800, HDW-F500, DVW-A500
