What do I really NEED?

Folks,

I have been wasting way too much time on this, so I thought I might defer to others. The project I am working on is a training video. We are going to be shooting it in HD on a boadcast camera.

In 2009 the client will distribute the video on DVD and the web, I would like to see a 720p 24fps version on the web, but time will tell. I know one of the clients owns a Blue-ray drive and HD tv, so I have a feeling I will be making a HD version this year for the client, not one for distribution.

What hardware do I really need to edit and produce this video? I am considering everything from a really nice $1200 gaming system with one quad core chip to a Mac Pro with 2-2.8GHz Xeon w/ a 1600MHz FSB, that all total will cost in the $3800 range.

My current thought is to offline the edit in SD, produce the DVD and web version, then online it to produce the Blue-ray if the customer wants to go to that expense right now.

I am assuming I can get by with the less expensive computer today, understanding the HD production is going to be slow.

What I am really struggling with is how to setup a “program monitor” for the edit. Right now I am thinking the best solution would be to go with the Blackmagic design DeckLink SP and a SD broadcast monitor. Is this the right way to go?

Can anyone recommend a good SD broadcast monitor that won't break the bank? I am a bit concerned about investing too much into a technology that is rapidly going away. I do see that JVC has some CRT units (JVC DT-V1710CGU) that are expandable from SD to HD. Would this be a viable option? Get the SDI card today and next year (2010) when I am producing the HD video, invest in the HD SDI card (along with a HD card for the computer)?
