Hi,
Difficult to pinpoint. but 2 things you could try -
1. rename the .exe file to something else, eg. .eee, such that it can never start up. If things run smooth thereafter, then you do not need the program. But to be on the safe side, do not delete it, just file it away on a diskette with a note as to its real name.
2. Go to microsoft's site and download the latest MSI, Microsoft Installer program. This is needed for most of the latest updates. Manually install it, and then try an auto update of all the other stuff.
