artifacting video when transferred to external hard drive

I rendered out a video from After Effects and the rendered video plays without any problem. I clicked and dragged the video to my external hard drive (which is connected by USB). When I copied the video back to my internal hard drive, the video is now displaying artifacts. I know that this is all digital so the copies should be the same no matter how many times I transfer the video from one hard drive to another. But why are these artifacts showing? Thanks and God bless.
