windows media player problems

I use media player to share video with clients in order to get approval on work. So it's important for me. I have a streaming server at Playstream.com
Media Player has stopped playing wmv files which are online. It plays local files. It will download and play avi files from the 'net. On trying to download wmv, it will lock up or return an error message stating that I am not connected to the internet. Media Player will not play wmv files encoded for http either.
I have:
1. Updated to Media Player 11
2. Shut down antivirus and firewall to no avail.
3. Checked to see if wmv has correct file association.
4. And, of course, restarted the computer.
Wmv will play on Media Player on another computer which is on the lan.
