Mac and PC avid project/media files compatible?

Hi...
Here in our office we are currently running Avid on a PC, but we are in need of another computer and have been thinking of getting a Mac.
But we ideally need to be able to share a large drive between the two computers, so that projects can be picked up on either one... we will be running
Avid media composer 3.0
Is it possible to have the OMFI folder on an external hard drive linked to the two?
We currently sharing media between two PCs, but can't work out whether this would be possible between a mac and a pc...
Any help would be much appreciated...
Many thanks for your time...
Ian
