thanks for the info Dylan. I tried the collapse tool this morning. Good to know about and would be perfect but it seems to only work on the video tracks.
I haven't noticed the fcp source in and out marks causing the sequence to unlink yet. but that doesn't sound like fun. I have noticed I have to render twice sometimes, once in the tab and again in sequence 2.
also, I found this forum discussing this same topic with some work around suggestions:

I might not need nesting but I've gotten used to it. Maybe it's the way I work. I'm making a movie that's built almost like a sketch comedy show. I like to isolate each individual sketch in it's own sequence. Plus, I'm using my editor as kind of a scratch pad to write and test ideas. Which seems to work better in different compartments. Keeps things cleaner. Then plug the sketch's sequence into the movie's sequence.
I really like cutting on avid but a lack of nesting might be a deal breaker for me. it's like switching from layered compositing to nodal compositing, once you make the transition it's hard to go back.
thanks again Dylan for taking the time to help out.
