CTRL + K is the way I work with them. Shrink the buggers as far as they will go.
If you really want to hide them, I believe it's CTRL + H which hides the selected tracks. To get them back you have to use the little hamburger menu at the bottom left of the timeline and either turn them on one at a time, or turn all tracks on at once. Unfortunately "all tracks on" turns on the film icons which you will want to then turn off.
