mixing HD and SD footage on Xpress Pro 5.7

Hi all. Hope you could all answer a quick question for me. We're editing a documentary where most of the footage was shot on DV so our project is SD 29.97 on the Avid Express Pro 5.7.
The director wants to shoot recreations on the Varicam: 720P 23.976fps. The question is, can the Avid Express Pro 5.7 (which I don't have much experience with) handle mixed formats and mixed frame rates in the same timeline? Can we digitize the HD 23.976 Varicam footage at a certain res so that we can just drop the footage into the SD 29.97 project? If so, what res?
We're low budget so we're trying to avoid the expensive step of having to downconvert the HD footage for the offline edit. Thanks for any help you can provide.
