Dan,
I'm sorry you're running into trouble. I hope you do realize that running an unsuppored configuration will save you money, but give you countless headaches as you're seeing now. My suggestion is to follow the readme pdf file that comes with the software and follow the configuration requirements. Also, the 980 is not supported in 2.7, you may be able to use a console command "legacyoverlay on" to help playback performace once the system is configured and you're able to launch. This should allow you to continue to use the 980 without having to upgrade the graphics card.
