Actually, Avid has made DNxHD available for any manufacturer to use. I believe it is open source. Ikegami has the codec built into they're HD Editcam cameras.
It's a real shame AJA and BMD aren't utilizing the DNxHD codec...it's amazing quality for the file size.
Also, if AJA and BMD where smart they'd get .mxf compatible and they could sell capture boards across the entire Avid line and other manufacturers that support the new format.
BTW, the bit rate varies for DNxHD...at the high end it's 220 mbps and they're coming out with a low-end 36(ish) mbps compression.
