Hi Anna,

You're right that the custom edges you apply gets applied to all sides of the object. With that said, for the LCD that you are making, you should be able to create 2 separate shapes, and place them together. One piece will be the LCD panel in the front while the other piece will be the piece in the back with all the exhaust holes. By using bump maps, you will be able to create the look for the holes.
