Hi Frank.

When an object is duplicated, the same Object Style is used for both objects.

To remove this link, do the following:
1. Select the second object
2. Open the Object Styles tab
3. Select Swatch > Unlink Object Style

Now the second object's materials can be modified without affecting the first object.
