Illustrator Help!

Okay, I am brand new to the 3d Invigorator as well as Adobe illustrator, so this may be the dumbest question imaginable. When i try to import a file from illustrator to the invigorator, a message pops up saying that there are no usable vector paths in that image. I thought when you create text or anything in illustrator it automatically created vectors. How do you do this?? i looked through the manual and just can't find anything. Please help!!
(invigorator classic, after effects 6.5, illustrator CS2, Windows XP, Pentium 4, 80 Gigs, uh...an apartment building....los angeles, jeans, and a t-shirt....)
