[Maxwell Federman] "There are lots of updates here on this ftp site... Perhaps I can update this version?? It's currently at 8.0.1 and I wonder if I must pay m100 to run the update... also if running just the latest update works or if they all need to be installed in sequence?
"

If you have Media 100 V8.01, you definitely should upgrade to V8.1.1, which is free. I also would recommend upgrading to V8.2.3a, which is the latest release of Media 100 i, but the V8.2 line is not free for V8.1 users. You could download the V8.2.3a release and have a look at the readme file to see what is new and to decide if the upgrade is worth it for you.

The installers always contain the full release, so no need to upgrade in sequence. But you definitely should make sure that you have your encryption code written down somewhere in case something goes wrong during the upgrade (very unlikely, but you never know).
