Simon,
To add to what Brian has posted when you select a clip in the timeline and in the tools ribbon before you click Create Connect FX enable the Generate Adjustment Segment and Smoke will automatically create a Gap effect above the selected clip. Then if you want multiple versions you can copy and paste the gap effect above the original clip to as many video layers you want and enable and disable as needed or use the layer versioning options.
