Out of sync

A friend rented my JVC-HD100 for a shoot. He's used the camera before. In digitizing his footage (720P30), everything looks fine, and then as one interview begins, the video starts to "stutter", as though pausing every few frames, and over the course of a few seconds, the audio goes out of sync.
I can digitize the footage into a 720P30 project, and if I speed the video up to 110%, I can sync it up easily. No evidence of the "stutter", altough I see it during digitizing.
I'm mystified. At first we wondered if the frame rate had changed, but that's not something that's done by accident based on anything I've seen.
Any suggestions on what might have happened? Thanks.
