Weird thing on print to video with DSR1500

Here's a weird one which I'd like to get to the bottom off:
On Friday night (against the clock obviously) I had to get a 6 min video on to a DSR1500 DVcam deck from FCP 7.0.2
Plugged it all in, set the input to ilink, hit print to video and hit record and all was well except that on the timeline in FCP the music was panned to CH 1 and the FX to CH 2 but the deck was recording a mixdown. I thought it might be the audio assignments on the deck but changing that didn't seem to make any difference, neither did changing the audio output on the sequence settings in FCP.
I didn't have a chance to play as the deck was in situ at an event but I'd love to know what's going on!
Many thanks.
