The distortion is a visual distortion that occurs whenever there is motion presented in the left side of the "screen".
The distortion appears as waves or more like a mirage heat wave distortion. Yes, like the image is underwater, or the water is rippling for a moment.
So, if someone walks by the camera from left to right, the distortion would appear as a rippling/wavy distortion until they reached a certain point. It only occurs in the left side.
It definetely gets encoded onto the tapes as I've played this back on multiple systems.
Again, the camera shop says it was (is) a guide post and arm extention unit problem.
They couldn't fix it but say if I replace the whole tape compartment that it should take care of the problem as all the heads and tape mechanisims will be brand new.
What do you think?
